Security Camera Systems Pay for Themselves!

At a quick glance a security camera system for a business looks like just another expense, another painful cost of doing business. In fact when funds are tight a video surveillance system is usually the first thing deleted from an operating budget. However, if the true value of a video surveillance system was understood it would be one of the last things deleted from a budget.

Online Video Surveillance System Providers, Hype vs. Substance

There are plenty of online electronic security stores to shop. From the clearly homemade website to the polished sleek masterpiece website, the internet provides them all. The internet has been, from its inception, a way for the "little guy" to compete with the giant corporations. A true level playing field. Conceptually this sounds great, until you as a consumer try to evaluate a company's size, stability and past performance. It's very difficult to verify all the claims that an online store may offer as fact. For example one polished, sleek, website claims "The internet's largest on line Security Camera Provider", but when you use Google maps to verify their corporate address it turns out they are operating out of a very small residence. Hence the problem for consumers, anyone can claim to be anything on the internet. It is important for consumers to understand that showing up in the top 10 of a search engines results is not a reflection of how reliable or stable a company is. It is actually a direct indication of how good their web programmer is. It is the result of the programmer's ability and success in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tactics, which has no direct assurance of the stability, size or trustworthiness of the business. Missing from the search results is the information which indicates the true stability, performance and size of the companies.

This in a nutshell is the challenge for consumers. The fact is very few online stores are true corporate organizations. To make things even more difficult for consumers, most "real" organizations with real facilities, employees and an existing customer base do not have a talent for penetrating the internet. The good news is that there are ways for a consumer to check the size and stability of a company online. For example:

  • Dunn & Bradstreet: Provides financial and credit history information on almost any size company.
  • Alexa:: Provides a website's statistical information such as its monthly visitors and how it ranks compared to other sites.
  • Network Solutions:: Provides the date the domain was established and the name of the person or organization that it's registered to.

One creative website compiles all this information specifically for the online security industry. They compile all this information and place a "trustworthy" rating on the company. Night Vision Cameras, can you see the light?

There are a lot of different types of security surveillance cameras available on the market now, but the dominant type is clearly the night vision camera. They cast an infrared light out a limited distance which the cameras imager can see. To the human eye all you see is darkness. This allows a camera to provide much better video in low light and even no light situations.

This night vision technology or Infrared illumination provides a black & white or often gray scale image. During the day the cameras provide clear full color video. As the light level drops the camera switches to IR or night vision video. When the light level increases the camera automatically reverts back to full color video.

This technology is not new, but what is spurring its use is the fact that the cost of these cameras have dropped considerably. You can now purchase a high quality, outdoor, 100' night vision surveillance camera for around $200. Often it is much cheaper to go with a night vision camera than to try and increase the lighting in a parking lot or warehouse.
